Frequently Asked Questions

LadyHow much will tracing my family history cost?

Once you have contacted us, we will get back to you with a free, no obligation, estimate for your requested research. Costs will depend on the starting information you are able to provide, the availability of relevant records and such factors as the rarity of the surname you are interested in. An estimate will also vary for a one-off search, a single line of enquiry or, research involving both the paternal and maternal lines. We conduct research in stages with an agreed budget for each stage. We also have a popular monthly installment plan to spread costs.

Holiday snapWhat constitutes a round of research?

A full round of research for example will normally trace both maternal and paternal lines back several further generations. We can never forsee exactly how far we shall be able to proceed during any particular stage. All families are different and unique in their own way. We will aim to go back as far as possible within the budget agreed.

Once we have exhausted the funds available, we will return to you with the option to proceed further. You may find that the information we have discovered during the first stage is enough to satisfy your curiosity or you may wish to continue the research, switch lines, or wait a while before initiating further research. This is entirely up to you.

We can begin research with as much or as little information as you have available.

If needs be, we can begin with just your name and date of birth. However it would save time if you tell us what you already know about your family, before we begin our investigations.

How long will the research take?

We aim to complete our enquiries within 4 to 8 weeks. If the research is likely to continue for a longer period of time, you will be kept informed of our progress. Smaller commissions can be undertaken in less time.

Rat hunterWhat will I receive when the round of research is complete?

You will receive a full narrative report regarding the history of the families we have traced, in a loose leaf folder, bound with ribbon and a title page. The report contains copies of documents examined, together with any certificates purchased. Full details regarding the historical sources consulted are also given. We can also supply additional copies of our reports for relatives if desired.

What areas and countries do you cover?

Whilst the majority of our research is carried out in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, we do have researchers farther afield. Please do contact us with your enquiry to see if we can be of assistance.

BabyHow far back can a family history be traced ?

All families are different and we can never guarantee exactly what we shall discover. A majority of families can be traced to the 1700’s and many to the start of parish registers in the time of Henry VIII and some families can even be traced through manorial records to the Doomsday Book following the Norman Conquest.
